10 Things I Wish I Knew Sooner (About Golf Event Management)

February 17, 2023

Golf events are a great way to bring people together, raise money for a cause, or simply have fun on the greens. However, organizing a successful golf event takes more than just booking a course and sending out invitations. As someone who has been involved in golf event management for a while, I've learned a lot of lessons the hard way.

In this article, I want to share 10 things I wish I knew sooner about golf event management, so that you can avoid common mistakes, streamline your planning process, and create an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Whether you're a seasoned event organizer or a first-timer, I hope you'll find some useful tips and insights in this article. So, let's tee off!

1. Plan ahead

This is not a college essay where you can start one week before it is due…

Golf event management requires careful planning and organization, so it's important to start early and give yourself plenty of time to prepare.

2. Utilize technology to collect data

One of the key benefits of using technology to collect data is that it can help you streamline your processes and save time.

Use an event management software to automate tasks like registration and payment collection, freeing up your time to focus on other important aspects of the event. This not only makes your job easier, but it also improves the participant experience by providing a seamless, efficient registration process.

3. Monetize the golf course

Golf events grow year over year by sponsors, not golfers. So many event organizers miss out on selling key opportunities all over the golf course. Consider promoting sponsors utilizing the golf/beverage carts, putting green, driving range, and awards dinner.

4. Branding is everything, except for when…

Branding is NOT everything.

Great branding won’t fix a poorly planned event. When your branding is strong and consistent, it can help attract sponsors who are interested in being associated with your event. A strong brand can make your event appear more reliable and trustworthy, which can encourage people to attend and recommend it to others.

5. Hire a professional event planner

One of my dad’s favorite quotes: "Many hands make light work."

If you don't have experience with event planning, or don't have an established board/planning committee, it can be helpful to hire a professional to help you organize and manage the event.

6. Build a strong team

Similar to assembling a winning foursome, building a strong team takes diverse skills, teamwork, and a shared passion for making a positive impact!

A successful golf event requires a strong team of staff and volunteers who can help with everything from registration to course management.

7. Communicate effectively

Communication is key when it comes to golf event management, so it's important to keep your participants, staff, and vendors informed and up-to-date throughout the planning process.

8. Promote the event

Promoting a charity golf event is like playing a round of golf - it takes strategy, focus, and a drive to make a difference for a cause you care about!

To attract participants and sponsors, it's important to promote the event through a variety of channels, including social media, email marketing, and local advertising.

9. Create a memorable experience

Just like a successful first date, a successful golf event leads to lasting connections, future partnerships, and an increased reputation in the community.

A great golf event is about more than just the round of golf itself – it also provides a memorable experience for participants and spectators. Your participants leave your event feeling excited and energized, just as you might hope your date leaves feeling excited to see you again.

10. Evaluate and improve

Everyone always assumes that the only way to make more money for your golf event is to bump up prices.

Let me share a little secret...don't do it. You will eventually out-price your loyal supporters.

What you should be doing is leveraging your donor data to evaluate what worked well and what could be improved, and identify which participants you can “bump up” to a larger package based on their donor activity.
